The Truth About Traveling for Free

Most of us have more than one credit card, but if you want to travel for free, you need to have the right ones.  A lot of people don’t make an effort to look for the right credit card, instead, they just take whatever credit card their bank offers.  Why?  Because it’s easier.

However, if you love to travel and want to travel for free as I do now, you need to target specific cards.  On top of that, you have to compare online offers, because they are never the same.  Some travel credit cards charge annual fees right away while other begin charging fees after the first year.

Some cards offer points which you can turn into miles, or use to pay for your accommodation wherever you go on your trip.  Some offer miles or points for flying on one specific airline, while others, on several different airlines or hotels.  That’s enough to make your head spin, but don’t worry, we’re here to help walk you through the process.

What’s Right for You

It can be confusing after you discover all of the options.  Here are some of the factors you should consider when deciding what credit cards are best for you if you:

  •     Travel mainly to and from particular cities,
  •     Want to venture off to new destinations and always leave from the same airport,
  •     Think about flying around the world on your dream vacation
  •     Decide to use your miles or points to pay for hotels instead of flights,
  •     And, most importantly, can you control your spending.

That last factor is especially important because, if you do not pay off your monthly statement in full, all of those miles or points won’t be free.  The interest amount you pay, until paid off in full, negates the free flight or the hotel room.  Yes, you must be very disciplined to take advantage of the credit card offers.

The Real Question

But, the real question is how can YOU really have a free flights or free hotel rooms?  Since you need to actually use these credit cards, I use them to buy everything.  I never shop for groceries using cash,  but, I make sure I have the money in my bank account to cover the exact amount I am going to spend BEFORE I use my card.

The moment I get home,  I pay off the exact amount I just spent using my checking or savings account.

Best Kept Secret of All

Not long ago, I found out about an online company that provides me with cash back whenever I shop through them either online or in stores.  They have agreements with more than 2,200 shops and online companies such as:

  • Amazon,
  • eBay,
  • Kohl’s,
  • Macy’s,
  • Von’s,
  • Walmart,

Having agreements with thousands of companies allows them to offer you cash back every time you spend money.  You can sign up for free and start off with $10 free cashback.

I love to shop using a card that gives me free miles or points and get cash back.  What more could you ask for?

  1. Hello! Your post is very well made. I have traveled a bit but did not really consider how to use my credit cards to make the most out of them. I got engaged right away and kept reading right to the end. Learning how to use credit cards is a huge advantage and the knowledge you have must be amazing to know. Another thing not taught in the conventional school system. I can see you getting tons of requests to know more about this important travel topic that is not normally discussed amongst young nomads that want to see the entire world. It’s a journey and so many people can get help thanks to your inviting post. I am checking out the rest of your website as you read this comment!

Cheers to everyone everywhere! Or how we Irish n’ Scottish say, slainte!

    1. Hi Rowan

Thank you for your comments. I think you are definitely right about the fact that this not taught in any school system. We will continue to write about various ways to travel for free and we would like to invite you to come back to us to read them, such as our latest info on house sitting services, allowing you to eliminate the cost of hotels.

  2. Sandra,
The key to any credit card is to pay them off before you have to pay interest on your purchases. They are a hand and should not be used for extra money, it will get you into trouble. Getting a card that will get you free travel will take a little research on your part , as each card will have different perks. Thanks for your information.
Although I do not fly or travel a lot, getting a card that pays for a room or short miles would be great. I will look forward to more information on your site.
